#1 “Black shapes crouched, lay, sat between the trees, leaning against the trunks, clinging to the earth, half coming out, half en faced within the dim light, in all the attitudes of pain, abandonment, and despair.” (pg 17)
- Describing the Congolese men in their conditions, actions and attitudes
#2 “They were dying slowly- it was very clear. They were not enemies, they were not criminals, and they were nothing earthly now, nothing but black shadows of disease and starvation lying confusedly in the greenish gloom.”(pg17)
- Depicting the role status of the Congolese individuals, as they didn’t do anything to the Europeans, but through conquest negative effects can be seen.
#3 Going up that river was like travelling back to the earliest beginnings of the world, when the vegetation rioted on the earth and the big trees were kings…The broadening waters flowed through a mob of wooded islands.”(pg33)
- A flashback of civilization before imperialism in the Congo
#4 “But there is no disguising the fact, Mr. Kurtz has done more harm than good to the Company. He did not see the time was not ripe for vigorous action…We must be cautious yet.”(pg. 61)
- Mr. Kurtz whom is an employee the company has many confrontations with the manager
#5 “I thought his memory was like the other memories of the dead that accumulate in every man’s life…I seemed to hear the whispered cry, ‘The horror! The horror! ’”
- Death as being a fearful thing to Marlow as he experiences it himself.
